Gilles Clement Gallery presents ROBERT MARS These Important Years

Vintage nostalgia and chic modern were the mood and the mode at the opening reception of the new solo exhibition Robert Mars: These Important Years at Gilles Clement Gallery, catered by Maison Prive. Guests mingled in the company of vibrant works that pay homage to unique and iconic personalities such as Marilyn Monroe, Elizabeth Taylor, Paul Newman, Audrey Hepburn, Sophia Loren, Kate Moss and Mick Jagger. Combining timeless images and brands with intricately designed backgrounds composed of vintage newsprint, papers and patterned graphics encased in acrylic resin, Mars captures the essence of American culture, incorporating a folk art sensibility into a pop art aesthetic, while revealing the timeless relevance and enduring influence of these icons on society, technology, politics and fashion. Through the application of a rich and layered color palette and tongue in cheek attitude, the paintings evoke a vintage quality of design that honor the idealized age of growth and hopefulness that was prevalent in the USA at the end of World War II – a time long before the internet, mobile technology and instant digital celebrity. On view through June 6th A limited quantity of signed copies of the artist’s latest book, Futurelics: Past is Present, are also available for purchase at the gallery.
